Upgrade Info
***************
Adobe Premiere 5.1 LE users can upgrade to the full version of Premiere at substantial savings.

For more information on upgrading, visit http://www.adobe.com/premiere, call 1-888-724-4507 or, if your computer has an internet connection you can launch Premiere LE, choose File > Adobe Online and click the Upgrades button.

You will need your current Premiere 5.1 LE serial number to order the upgrade from LE to full version. This entire serial number can be found on your registration card and the partial serial number minus the last three digits can be found in the "About Adobe Premiere" splash screen during startup. You can access this screen by going to the Apple menu and choosing "About Premiere." The full version of Adobe Premiere will include a new serial number on the CD case that you will need to use to install. The LE serial number will not be recognized in the full version installer.

INSTALLATION
******************
For best results, disable all extensions except the CD-ROM driver before installing Adobe Premiere. (You need to leave the CD-ROM driver enabled, so that you can install Premiere from the Adobe Premiere CD.) Under certain circumstances, some extensions have been known to interfere with the installation process.

You can use the Extensions Manager control panel (included with Mac OS) to start your computer with basic extensions only, including the CD-ROM driver. For more information, see the Mac OS documentation or online Help.

To install Premiere LE:
1 Insert the Adobe Premiere LE Application CD-ROM disc into your CD-ROM drive.
2 Open the folder of the correct language version you want to install.
3 Open the Premiere 5.1 LE Installer folder.
4 Double-click the Install Adobe Premiere LE icon to begin the installation process.
5 Follow the on-screen instructions until installation is complete.
6 Your serial number can be found on the registration card, CD case or may be included in your capture card documentation. The serial number should begin with "MSM." You should safeguard your serial number. You will need this for technical support and the ability to upgrade your copy of Premiere.

You should also install Adobe Acrobat. The installer can be found in the Acrobat folder. This will allow you to view and print the Premiere LE User Guide that is installed along with Adobe Premiere 5.1 LE.

Premiere needs QuickTime 3.0 or later. If you don't already have QuickTime 3.0 or later installed on your computer, run the separate QuickTime 3.0.2 installer which is included on the Premiere Application CD-ROM. The latest version of QuickTime is available from Apple Computer's U. S. Web site at http://www.apple.com/quicktime.

QuickTime 3 Pro is a paid version of QuickTime 3 that contains additional useful features that are available in Apple's Movie Player. Although QuickTime Pro doesn't add any functionality to Premiere, it is compatible with Premiere. QuickTime 3 Pro is available from Apple Computer and is not included with Premiere.

*********************************************************************
INSTALLING FONTS AND WORKING WITH ATM 4.0 LIGHT
*********************************************************************
Adobe Type Manager (ATM folder) can also be installed for additional fonts. Adobe Premiere uses fonts only for titles you create in the Title window. Adobe Premiere does not require Adobe Type Manager (ATM); however, Premiere will work with ATM to display and print fonts installed by ATM on your hard drive.

Adobe Premiere installs fonts in the Fonts folder located in the System Folder. This means they will be available to all applications all the time. If you want to control the availability of these fonts by using ATM Deluxe, drag the fonts out of the Fonts folder and into another folder. If you do not want to use the fonts installed in Premiere's Fonts folder, or if these fonts are copies of other fonts that you have elsewhere on your system, delete the fonts from the Fonts folder.

List of fonts installed: ACaslon, Bad Cabbage ICG, BakerSignet, Bodoni, Broadband ICG, Gothic 13, Goudy ExtraBold, Mini Pics Head Buddies, News Gothic, Bold, OCRA & OCRB Alternate, Orator, Poplar, Publicity Gothic ICG Solid, Tempo HeavyCondensed, and Vendome ICG Black.

Refer to the ATM documentation in the ATM 4.0 folder for more information on using ATM.

**************************************************
COMPATIBLE CAPTURE CARD DRIVERS
**************************************************
Capture card companies go through a set of certification requirements in order to bundle Adobe Premiere 5.1 LE. Please check your capture card documentation and release notes to see what feature sets of Adobe Premiere are supported.

You can verify your capture card is compatible with Adobe Premiere 5.1 LE by referring to Adobe Systems Inc.'s list of certified capture on Adobe's U. S. Web site at: http://www.adobe.com/premiere

If your capture card/device is not listed please consult with your capture card manufacturer on when they will have Premiere 5.1 compatible drivers released

ADOBE ONLINE
********************
The most up-to-date information about Premiere is available from the Adobe Web site in the United States. To connect, choose Adobe Online from Premiere's File menu. Within the dialog box are hot spots that can launch your Web browser and take you to specific locations on the Adobe Web site where you will be able to access product-specific support, file updates, tips and more.

Using the Adobe Online feature requires an Internet connection capable of accessing the World Wide Web and a Web browser application such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer.

You can also visit Adobe Premiere's main web site at http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/premiere/main.html .

TROUBLESHOOTING
**************************
CHECK ADOBE PREMIERE'S ONLINE TECH SUPPORT DATABASE
Refer to the "Adobe Online" section above on how you can access Adobe's Technical Support database for the latest in troubleshooting documents.

CAN'T LAUNCH PREMIERE BECAUSE OF QUICKTIME MEMORY PROBLEMS
QuickTime needs to load into the System partition of memory. This means you need to have approximately 3.5 megabytes of memory available AFTER launching Premiere. If you get this error message on startup, try the following solutions

- Buy more memory.

- Reduce the amount of memory used by the system by removing extensions using the Extension Manager control panel.

- As a last resort, reduce the amount of memory used by Premiere. You can adjust your memory settings for Premiere by using the Get Info command on the Adobe Premiere 5.1 icon in the Finder, and reducing the Preferred Memory Size value by approximately 3500. You may have to experiment with different values before you find the value that works for you.

HOW DO I RESET PREMIERE'S PREFERENCES
If you run into problems that didn't happen earlier and want to reset Premiere back to its defaults you can delete the "Adobe Premiere(r) 5.1 Prefs" file found in your preferences folder in the System folder. You may also need to delete the "QuickTime Preferences" in your preferences folder if you are getting QuickTime error messages.

FILES GREATER THAN 2GB IN SIZE
Although Premiere 5.1 doesn't support individual files larger than 2 gigabytes in size, you can put multiple clips of that size in the timeline to get a maximum of 3 hours of playback.

REDRAW PROBLEMS IN WINDOWS AND PALETTES
If windows and palettes are not redrawing correctly, check to make sure they do not overlap the Source or Program view in the Monitor window. You can hide or show all palettes by pressing Tab; this may help you keep palettes and windows from overlapping at lower monitor resolutions.

CAN'T DRAG CLIP TO SAME TIME POSITION ON ANOTHER TRACK
You may not be able to drag a clip to the same time position on another track if the clip is linked to audio and the Video 1 track is collapsed. There are two ways to override this behavior:
- Hold down the Control key as you drag.
- Click the triangle to the left of the Video 1 track name, and then drag the clip.

KNOWN ISSUES
********************
Issues in Mac Premiere 5.1 LE:

Saving projects to the desktop may result in the project icons piling up on top of each other. If you have problems finding your project on your desktop choose "clean up" under the Finder's view menu.

Premiere does not load plug-ins that are "locked" files. This can occur if a third party plug-in is copied from a CD for example. Make sure the plug-in file is unlocked by using the finder's get info command on the file after it is copied to the Premiere Plug-Ins folder on your hard disk.

Issues in both Mac and Windows Premiere 5.1 LE:

Premiere 5.1 LE can open saved projects from the full version, but will be unable to change settings that are only available in the full version. When you upgrade up to the full Premiere 5.1 version you can still open your projects saved in LE. However, a Premiere 5.1 (full or LE) project can not be opened by Adobe Premiere 5.0 or earlier. Windows users will not get any error message. Mac users will get the message "That file was created by a new version of Premiere." Users with versions previous to Premiere 5.1 (LE or full) need to update to Adobe Premiere 5.1 (LE or full) or later to open these projects.

Get Properties of QuickTime Movies may report audio compression as: "big Endian" or "little Endian." This is uncompressed audio and the term refers to the specific byte order of the audio.

Marking a video track as exclude will delete your video previews and excluding an audio track will delete your audio previews. When using the shy track feature, be careful to not mark it as exclude to avoid rebuilding your previews.

Stop motion capture support is dependent on your capture card. Not all capture cards fully support this feature.

Export to tape works well from all windows (timeline & monitor windows), except the clip window where audio may drop out.

If you have imported a series of still images as a sequence, and then want to import the first frame as a single image, you will be unable to do so as long as that still image is in the same folder as the sequence. You should copy this frame into a new folder and import it from there or use Premiere's frame hold feature on your sequence.

If you have imported the first image as a still image and then want to import all of the images in the same folder as a sequence you will be unable to do so. You'll need to create a new folder and copy the still images in the sequence from the original folder to this new folder, and then import the sequence from the new folder.

When zoomed into frame view you may temporarily hear audio from a recently excluded audio track when scrubbing. This is from the left over audio that was cached in the buffer and will quickly cease.

To ensure correct direction of a transition (i.e. whether the transition proceeds from 1A to 1B or 1B to 1A) either put the media in the next track before placing the transition or manually select the flow of the transition for every other video clip.

Preview files are not cross platform compatible. Users intending to take a project cross platform should delete their preview files before saving their project if they want to avoid being asked for them when they reopen their project on the other platform.

The timebase in your project settings, describes the time divisions Premiere uses to position edits in the Timeline. If you change the timebase after you've already made some edits, you may see undesirable side effects that are an unavoidable mathematical result of changing the time divisions. Try to settle on your timebase before you start, basing it on the frame rate requirements of your final medium. Avoid changing the timebase after you've made edits, but if it happens accidentally, try reverting to a previous version or archive of the project (see "Correcting mistakes" in the Adobe Premiere User Guide).

Compatibility problems between QuickTime and Novell networks may give you problem when opening QuickTime .MOV, .JPG, .GIF or .PCT files. To open these file types in Premiere, copy them from the network to your local drive.
